About Us
In 2008 the idea of a domestic violence shelter in Steuben County, Indiana, began with a woman and her two friends who wanted to make a difference in the lives of women and their children struggling with that kind of trauma. From that idea, TLC-Steuben, Inc. was born. After obtaining 501(c)(3) status, a group in 2009 formed its first Board of Directors. In 2010, a house was gifted to TLC-Steuben by Farmers State Bank and work began in earnest to make the home habitable for clients. The first woman entered TLC-Steuben in November of 2011. In 2019, TLC-Steuben began using the “doing business as” name of TLC House Indiana (“TLC”) and that is how the facility remains known today in its community.
TLC operates according to its mission statement of “Empowering survivors of domestic violence by providing opportunities for safe shelter, self-sufficiency and recovery.”
TLC accomplishes its mission through a wide variety of supportive services, educational and counseling opportunities, a connection to resources available in its community, and – most importantly – providing residents with the time to heal. When victims leave TLC, the goal is for them to be functioning and contributing individuals in the communities where they choose to live.
HOW WE OPERATE
TLC is guided by the experience of an Executive Director who oversees the daily functioning of the residence. TLC is further guided and overseen by a dedicated Board of Directors to whom the Executive Director reports. As a member of the Board, the Executive Director joins monthly Board of Director meetings and, together, these individuals set policy and make decisions so that the goals of TLC can be met.
